1. In order to qualify for free after-school tutoring there are several criteria that have to be met.  First, your child’s school must be a Title I school.  Second, the school will not have met adequate yearly progress (AYP) for two years in a row.  Third, your child must qualify for free or reduced lunch to qualify for free tutoring.

2. You, as a parent, are given the choice of several companies in which to place your child.  The district/division then communicates with the company you have chosen to work with your child. So the choice is yours.

3. We currently offer reading and/or math for our after-school tutoring program.

4. Tutoring is usually is two to three days per week.  The days and times are determined by the school district/divisions who work in conjunction with the school principals to determine available times, space, and days.

5. On average, we have 90-minute sessions, two to three days per week. The program is approximately 30 hours in total and lasts about 10 weeks.

6. After-school tutoring takes place in your child’s school, with few exceptions.

7. Our student to tutor ratio is a maximum of 6 students to 1 tutor.  We also overstaff by hiring a supervising Lead Teacher who can assist students who may be struggling with the concepts being taught and work with those children in smaller groups or one on one.

8. Your child will be tested with a pre-assessment at the beginning of tutoring.  After completing the pre-assessment an individualized Student Learning Plan (SLP) will be created and sent to you for review and signature.  Our tutors evaluate your child’s progress once a month and a progress report will be sent home with your child for your review. The progress reports will reflect goals set forth in the Student Learning Plan.  A post-assessment will be given to your child upon completion of the program.  A final test comparison will be sent to you once the program is complete.   And always feel free to talk to your child’s tutor or call the home office to talk about your child’s progress.

9. Academics Plus®, Inc. has been in business since 1989.  We began our business as an in-center tutoring company and have expanded to provide after-school tutoring through our SES program, as well as online tutoring.

10. Academics Plus®, Inc. seeks to employ the highest qualified instructors to provide services to students.  We seek to employ staff with the highest degrees and certification in Reading, Math, and Exceptional Children/Special Needs Populations.  Applicants’ years of teaching experience as well as the subjects taught are considered.  Applicants who meet these criteria are given first consideration for positions.  Four-year degreed applicants must demonstrate teaching experience or reference their past experience in an instructional capacity.  Applicants with two-year degrees are considered for employment by Academics Plus®, Inc.  All potential Academics Plus®, Inc. employees will have a criminal background check.

11. Homework assistance is not included in after-school tutoring.  Our intention is to provide supplementary instruction so that your child becomes a more independent learner and is better able to complete homework without additional support.

12. Some school districts/divisions provide bus transportation for the after-school tutoring program.  If transportation is not provided by the school, then it will be the parent’s responsibility to make sure that the child has a ride home when the tutoring session is finished.

13. Snacks/refreshments will be given to your child at the discretion of the school district/division.  Academics Plus®, Inc. does not provide snacks/refreshments.

14. Your child will be working on concepts in line with the state curriculum.  These concepts parallel what they are learning in the classroom and better prepare them for the end of grade tests. We use hands on learning with manipulatives in both reading and/or math. At this time, homework is not a part of the free tutoring program.

15. Our program provides immersion in the English language through a reduced student to teacher ratio combined with peer and tutor interaction to develop knowledge and understanding of the language and related skills in reading and/or math.

16. All your child needs to bring to tutoring is a good attitude and a desire to learn.  He/she will be provided with paper, pencil and all the materials that will be needed during the tutoring session.
