In order to help parents reinforce ideas learned in school and in tutoring, Academics Plus, Inc. is offering a Lesson series on our blog that demonstrates basic concepts using items you can find around the house.
Division –
Division basically involves separating one large group into smaller groups.
What you will need:
- Spoons
- A table
- A piece of paper
- A pen
Directions:
1. Clear a space on your table and set out ten pieces of silverware, such as spoons, like so:
2. Have your child count the number of spoons present on the table, and write it down on the piece of paper. Have your child write down the number two on the piece of paper. Then, show them how to count two spoons and separate them from the others, like so:
3. Have them do the same thing with the rest of the spoons so that there are five groups of 2. The spoons should look like so:
4. Once your child has completed the grouping, have them count how many groups of spoons they have. They should have five groups of two spoons. Once they have completed the activity, they should have three numbers written down like so:
5. Draw the appropriate symbols between the numbers so that you have an equation like so:
6. Continue the same activity using a variety of groups and numbers to show how to physically divide.
