In order to help parents reinforce ideas learned in school and in tutoring, Academics Plus, Inc. is offering a Lesson series on our blog that demonstrates basic concepts using items you can find around the house.
Verbs
Verbs are action words. They describe a form of action within a sentence.
What you will need:
- Free space inside or out.
- A small chalk board, white board, or a piece of paper
- A marker.
Directions:
1. Have your child stand in the free space while you hold the chalk board, white board, and piece of paper. Write the following sentence:
I walk to the store.
2. Tell your child to identify the verb by doing the action. If they can’t identify the verb, point to each word in the sentence and ask them to act the word out. They will quickly discover that they cannot act out any word except “walk”.
3. Write the following sentence:
I jump across the pond.
4. Tell your child to identify the verb by doing the action. Once they have mastered this concept, write the following sentence:
I ____ to the music.
5. Tell your child to identify the missing verb by doing the action. Then have them write the word in the space.
6. Repeat the steps with the following sentences:
- • I throw the ball.
- • I hide from my friends.
- • I read a book.
- • I bite an apple.
- • I roll around on the grass.
